Exploring Amsterdam

Today was our first full day in Amsterdam and we had some fun. It started off with a pretty good walk to the area where our Segway rental was located. We had breakfast right on the river in this unique building with an odd shape, that comes to a point.

Then it was to the Segway store to get our helmets and training. Most of our group had ridden Segways before but we did have a couple of newbies. Not me though. We got a little bit of time to practice before heading off on the tour.

And then off we went. Amsterdam is just insane for traffic, bicycle traffic. 1.2 million bikes, more than the population. But we saw many sights and made a few stops, including a chocolate factory and also a shop that makes special pancakes and other stuff like ice cream. Kathy has included photos.

We stopped for a group photo along the way.  After our ride ended, at a different place than we started, we split up into three groups to do some of our own things. A few of us walked quite a distance to get back to our hotel. Kathy, Terry, and I then went for a light lunch.

We gathered back together for a river cruise in the early evening, seeing many buildings and bridges along the river. Many of the older buildings were built in the 1600’s and aren’t so straight any more.

Then we saw an even stranger site, a very narrow house just a few feet wide between two larger buildings.

Following our cruise we split up again and I headed back to the hotel to pack up, print boarding passes, and prepare to fly to Minneapolis tomorrow.
