Here is our beautiful Airbnb outside of Boxtel. We have a complete house to ourselves and beds for all eight of us. After Cory cooked us an awesome breakfast we were on our way for the day!
Our first stop was at the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek. We had plans to see this when we were here in June but ran out of time. There is so much to take in!
This area we are in is the area where Operation Market Garden took place and the reason we are here.
Our next stop was to walk across the De Oversteek Bridge which is across the Waal River in Nijmegen. Forty-eight American soldiers lost their lives here 75 years ago during Operation Market Garden in an attempt to capture the bridge.
At the end of the Bridge is a memorial to the 48 soldiers.
After having dinner at a Dutch Street Food Cafe we returned to the bridge for the Waal Sunset Bridge March. Every night a ceremonial march across the bridge starts at sundown. Tonight amongst the group of locals marching was also the Major General of the 101st Airborne from Kentucky as well as five US soldiers from North Carolina representing the same unit as 75 years ago, the 504 of 82nd Airborne. Anyone is welcome to join the march. There are 48 lights on the bridge for the 48 soldiers which light up one by one as the March passes each one. Bryan, Terry, and I joined the march.
And now we are ready for a good night’s sleep before the day of the 75th Anniversary Celebration!
