We Are On Our Way!

Our journey started yesterday, Friday, Sept 13th as we left our Mission Builder site at Metigoshe at 5:00 and headed to Ryan and Lindsay’s in Fargo. However, that plan changed when Ryan called to say Keagan came home from day care with pink eye so onto another plan….we stayed at Pat and Brooke’s. As planned we were picked up in Fargo by Bruce and Jackie and then made a stop in Fergus Falls, MN to pick up Bryan. We brought flowers for Karen to show our sympathy for her not being able to make the trip due to recent foot surgery.

So with Bryan on board we headed to Minneapolis to a Park and Fly at the Hilton. We loaded onto the shuttle to the airport and the driver says “So where are you going?” So Bruce tells the story and now the driver is literally in tears as we drive to the airport. And so our emotions continue to ramp up!

We flew Minneapolis to Reykjavik, Iceland and from there to Amsterdam arriving on Sunday around 12:30 in time for another day. We met up with Vince and Lynn, picked up our car rentals, and we were on our way.

We drove to our Airbnb and picked up Bryan’s son, Cory, who currently lives in Germany and joined us to do pictures and video of this journey. And then we were off to Eerde to deliver the uniform which we thought was a matter of dropping it off but it was so much more!

They were expecting us and so they were there to greet us. As we presented the uniform to Erwin he explained to the group gathered there what Dad’s unit of 14 men did to help win the battle for Eerde. Others were there in preparation for the celebration on Tuesday. So the first order of business was to stop and have a toast in honor of Dad. And as we toasted a C-47 and three Spitfires planes flew overhead!

We then walked Dad’s uniform to the museum inside the windmill and when we arrived they informed us that we could dress the mannequin with Dad’s uniform! And then the tears just flowed as we put our father’s uniform on the mannequin. We also brought his boots and his prayer book that was still inside the jacket.

What an honor….what an emotional day….what a day that I will never forget.

Kathy
