Today was mostly about getting packed up and riding on the train. We arrived in Salzburg after about six hours on four or five different trains. We took the slower trains to avoid Munich and crowded trains. For the next two nights we are in an AIR-BNB with incredible scenery out the windows.
You need to look very closely, but at the peak of the mountain in the following photograph is Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat where we are headed on Tuesday.
We started walking towards the old town area. Along the path we came upon the monastery where a portion of “The Sound of Music” was filmed. We also walked through the cemetery that is in the film close to the end of the movie. What is interesting is that these burial sites are rented. As long as the family pays rent, the grave stone remains. Failure to pay rent results in the grave stone being removed and the site becoming available for someone else. The body is not removed, but someone else can now be buried there and have a grave stone installed. The bodies are all cremated. We got into the old downtown area and ate supper at an Irish pub.
We walked along the river and then crossed over a bridge where Cory took this photo.
We continued to explore including the town center which included a cathedral, a really really old town hall, and an old town hall. Both of the town halls are now museums.
We walked past the building where Mozart was born.
We also noticed metal plates embedded in the sidewalk in some places. These turned out to contain the names of Jews who were removed from the building by the Nazis and sent to the extermination camps.
We plan to spend Monday exploring the town and then go to Berchtesgaden on Tuesday.
