Bastogne and The Battle of the Bulge

Monday, June 17, 2019

After another wonderful breakfast we were on our way to Bastogne. On the way we stopped at Margraten to visit the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial. It is a beautiful cemetery where 8301 American soldiers are buried. All I could think of looking at row upon row of crosses were the many parents who lost their son fighting for the freedom of others. It was very moving.

We continued on to Bastogne with our plan to visit the 101st Airborne Museum only to find out that it is closed on Mondays. BCBD9F6C-C89E-4EF6-9B39-2DC7B1C56358

And so we continued on to the Mardasson Museum where we had an audio tour highlighting The Battle of the Bulge of which our father was a part of. And the most dramatic thing I saw was the statement that 65 million people were killed as a result of WWII.

And outside of the museum was this memorial honoring the American soldiers who helped liberate Belgium.

We ended another long day with dinner in McAuliffe Square.

And tomorrow we are off to Bayeux and the beaches of Normandy.
