We left the airport in Amsterdam and drove about an hour to Oosterbeek where there is a small museum dedicated to “Operation Market Garden” which was intended to capture a number of bridges from The Netherlands into Northern Germany. Dad’s unit, a part of the 101st Airborne Division, played a role in the battle. Today’s sightseeing involved the participation of the British forces and the US 82nd Airborne Division.
After Oosterbeek we had lunch, checked into our hotel in Arnhem, and took a nap. We then headed for the river and visited a number of historic sights from the battle. The British did capture the bridge at Arnhem, but could not get support and Germany regained control of the bridge as the British groups ran out of supplies and men.
We finished off the day with supper at a Mexican restaurant.

This is the view from our hotel.
An impressive view downtown.
The view of the historic bridge. The original bridge was replaced in 1949 but this is a replica of the original.
Replica scene of two soldiers.
Hopefully this is not active.
Just a few pictures since Kathy posted most of the same ones.
